Preventing And Cleaning Up Water Damage To Furniture And Electronics Print E-mail

If you are a homeowner who feels like you have to constantly deal with the threat of water damage in your furniture and electronics, then you may feel relieved to know that there are ways to protect your home from the mold, rotting, and other damage that water can bring to these items. The best thing is that these steps are actually very easy to follow and do not take very much effort.

The first thing you can deal with is your furniture. Obviously, on wooden furniture, you can prevent any minor water damage by using coasters to put your drinks on. This will prevent the nasty ring from appearing on your table. The next piece of furniture in need of protecting is your couch and chairs. If you have a dog that likes to play outside and has a bad habit of getting wet and muddy, then of course you want to keep him off of your fabric or leather upholstered furniture. Sometimes that just is not as easy as it might sound with some pets, so a good suggestion may be plastic covers to go over the cushions of your couch.

You should also keep an eye on your mattress. If you were to spill a drink on your mattress, it is a good idea for you to try and clean the mess up as soon as you can, because if it is ignored, the liquid can seep into the cushioning of the mattress and build up mold and this could lead to you having to throw the mattress out and replace it. Clean it with something appropriate for the stain and dry it thoroughly before putting on fresh linens.

You must also keep an eye on your electronics. Let us say that you have just finished putting together a brand new entertainment system, and you have a celebratory drink. But then you happen to trip over a loose wire and drink goes all across your TV, DVD player, and stereo. Now you are left with damaged electronics, right? Well, that may not be the case. Were the things in your entertainment center plugged in? If not, then your entertainment center may be repairable. If the system was unplugged, that means no power was going through it, which means there was no chance for the system to short out. If the liquid was nothing more than water, then you can simply wait on your system to dry out for a week or two. It will be well worth the wait when all costs are considered.
